My letter to save the planet! (Geography)

Dear Ban Ki Moon,

I am extremely concerned that climate change has taken itself too far. Especially since in the past few years, global warming has become a dangerous hazard. Carbon Dioxide is one of the main causes of this issue. Did you know that the five hottest years ever recorded were just in the past ten years (In the 1990’s)?

As a fact, sea levels are rising, and many people living on islands have had to flee. The main cause of this was the melting glaciers from the north and south poles. Did you know that now, the whole of the North Pole has melted, and boats can go through where the North Pole used to be? In addition to this, polar bears and many other creatures that have lived in the North Pole have now been found drowned at the bottom of the sea as they have absolutely nowhere to go.

Storms such as whirlwinds and typhoons are now getting stronger, and building up now, so many living things are losing their homes. I think it may be essential to build a room under the ground of every country, so that if there is a bad storm or a sea rising in level, then there is always shelter to go to.

Insects have become annoying, as they normally come out when it is warm. Because of climate change and global warming, more insects are gathering. Insects can spread different types of diseases – Such as, in Africa, there is a major problem with Malaria. Many bugs and insects are spreading Malaria.

Climate change is also affecting life itself and many plants too. Since it is affecting plant-life, many farms with crops growing have been affected with too much rain, or too much sun, or too much wind. If it keeps going at this rate then there will be no fruits or vegetables for human-beings or animals to eat. And, also plants are good for the environment and help to clear the air for humans to breath.

People burn and/or cut down too much forest land. Did you know that forests are also know as “The lungs of the Earth” ? This is because they take in the human air, which is mostly carbon dioxide (And that is the thing we don’t need) and breath out our oxygen (Which is what keeps us alive). But since too many people are cutting and burning down forests for things people want and may not need, there will be no plant-life to suck up any carbon dioxide to clear our air for us.

Another effect of climate change and global warming, is greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses are gasses which are formed by burning fossil fuels. They then go into earths atmosphere and break up the ozone layer. If the ozone layer breaks any further, then the suns rays will become strong, and we will have more of a chance of dying.

Fossil fuels are energy sources that have been formed over the past 1 million years. You use them most in transport, such as: cars, trains, buses, etc. People worldwide use up too much fossil fuels and so it is breaking the ozone layer and affecting our planet.

I just have one question that maybe you could answer… Why do the leaders of the world not help, or speak up, or have more conferences?

Some ways of saving energy to reduce the amount of climate change are having less cars or car-pull, making energy-saving products cheaper so that people can afford to buy and use them, and also you could make feul-engined cars more expensive than normal whilst making energy saving cars cheaper to buy, and use other sources of energy, like solar energy, wing power, or water power, and have more world conferences, and you could also use the three “R’s” Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and many more that could go on, and on.

Here is a saying from a book, “…there is only one world. One earth. If you go to space and look around, there’s nothing else that’s close, but the earth. From space, it looks beautiful with blue and green patches with spirals of white cloud. There is no other close planet around us that we could live on without there being any problems. If we were to not take our chances, then we could completely loose our beloved homes, and there would be nothing left of us. We should take that chance now, not never…”

I hope you can help, as you are one of the many chances we could take. If you take action now, then we could all be saved from this huge issue of climate change.

Please help – Save our souls.

Wow! I am speechless. This was breath taking writing. You really did a great job of blending facts and science with emotion and passion. This was a moving plea to an unknown audience that really hit the mark.

This would make a great script for a series of moving photographs. I am blown away that a year 7 student could write with such feelings, authority, and knowledge.

The world needs more young people with sort of vision, if we are to have any hope of making change. Thank you for this wonderful statement.

This is a truly exceptional, inspirational and also quite sad piece of writing. Brilliant.

Thank-you for all of the lovely comments. I am glad to hear that all of you like my post, and I feel absolutely great to be blogger of the week.

It took me about 3 hours to write it all up, and I thought that I might share it on my blog because it is one of my greatest pieces of work I have ever done.

I am so pleased and I can’t change my mind!

    Iona. (Lilitazz)
